Duchamp wanted to remove the artist from art. Or destroy art all together. Who knows. I read today that none of his original readymades survive and the author suggested that maybe Duchamp had a hand in that. There are even people who theorize that his readymades might not even been readymades, that he created them from scratch (?!) and then built the entire idea of readymades as a big joke. He was quite the prankster.
There really wasn't much of a point to this post. I finished reading yet another book about Duchamp (among others) today and while there's a lot swirling around in my head that I could say, none of it will really clear up enough to get smacked down into words. So there.
I'm thinking maybe art shouldn't be a noun. Maybe it should be more like boil, sear, shove, truncate, fossilize, or inhale.
