We just got back from The Movie.
Most of you gals have a thing going for Legolas which is fine... he is a lovely boy and all but Aragorn is all man. Good grief that man is sexy. Ok, on to less carnal comments about the film.
We really really enjoyed it. Actors/characters...
Elijah Wood was perfect for Frodo. He got that whole deer caught in headlights thing really well.
Ian McKellen absolutely my idea of Gandalf. Both powerful and fatherly. What a fantastic actor.
Viggo Mortensen Ooooo see my above comments on Aragorn.
S. Astin/B. Boyd/D. Monaghan Sam was fine though it seemed to me they wanted to make sure no one got the idea that there was any hanky panky between Frodo and Sam by having Sam go all googly over the gal at the party (which is not to say that I thought there was any hanky panky between the two of them, I am sure it was intended to be a heartwarming friendship it was just that the amount of fawning made me raise my eyebrow a wee bit). Merry should have been more serious and responsible. I assume they will do more with his character development in the next movie. Pippin was cute.
Liv Tyler I ended up not hating her as much as I feared I would. Aside from the scene after she crosses the river with Frodo and goes all "please don't die on me Frodo" weepy she was lovely. I especially liked her voice and accent. It didn't sound at all Liv-ish.
Cate Blanchette is one of those actors whom could read the phone book and I would adore. Any role she plays is fine with me. I just love to watch her.
O. Bloom/S. Bean/J. Rhys-Davies All did marvelous jobs. I thought S.B. struck a good balance in his performance. J. R-D was amusing (Nobody tosses a drawf) and the guys were greatly entertained by Legolas's ability to "kick ass".
Ian Holm was Bilbo Baggins. I can't think of anyone else who would do it as well. Another brilliant actor of course.
All of us had the biggest problem with Hugo Weaving as Elrond. Not only do we have trouble seeing him as anything but Agent Smith but I felt like the way they showed Elrond was all wrong. In the books he seems like a caring and wise man who makes them feel safe. In the movie he seemed angry and bitter. I don't get it.
*sigh* I want to see it again... NOW but can't till maybe next week. There were some special effects I wish had been better done (one of the more glaring ones was when Legolas jumped on the back of the cave troll... it just looked cartoonish) but overall it was just a wonderful film. I was not disappointed.

You forgot to mention Christopher Lee as Saruman. Good stuff there as well.
Elijah Wood was just amazing though. Exactly how I pictured Frodo to be.
I'm just amazed that they got the hobbits to look so well size-wize.
