Dull family stuff.
Sep. 18th, 2004 11:21 pmDesperate for something to do today (it was such a beautiful day), we took the kids to Stone Mountain. For most of my life it's been the same thing, a large hunk of granite with various Confederate persons carved into it, a skylift to the top, and a large lawn where you can watch a laser show at night. Nothing spectacular. Well now it seems they're making a bid for greater fame and have added Attractions. They've put in a couple of buildings full of games aimed at younger kids and a bunch of new shops and restaurants. Anyway, we let the kids play, took them on the train ride (trains are always a hit for some weird reason), rode the skylift up the mountain and walked down (mildly terrifying with two girls who wanted to RUN full speed down the thing), had dinner in one of the ridiculously over-themed new eatin' joints, then settled in on the lawn for the flag waving, redneck spectacular that is the Stone Mountain laser show complete with a crowd pleasing Devil Went Down to Georgia number. The girls made a friend who squealed with them every time a firework went off and much fun seemed to be had. It was the best day out we've had with the girls I think. Aside from some whining and mild disobedience they were pretty well behaved. Hopefully we can look forward to more enjoyable days doing things as they get older and more manageable... well till they are teens and don't want to be caught dead with us.
Oh yeah, I did have to clap my hand over Tomas' mouth when during I'm Proud to be an American (or whatever the hell that song is called) he started to scream out something about the Patriot Act when the lines "cause the flag still stand for freedom and they can't take that away" came up. Didn't really want several hundred angry God Fearin' rednecks after us. Though I must admit, the crowd tonight seemed a little more mixed up than it has in previous years. Not enough of course to keep them from all whistling and cheering during the Dixieland song where they bring the carving to life and the Confederate chaps go riding off on their happy little horsies. Whee.
