Feb. 11th, 2005 07:14 pmI've been watching the Ken Burns Jazz documentary on dvd through Netflix. It started off in New Orleans with Storyville and people like Jelly Roll Morton (which all meshes well with the book I'm reading about Storyville) through Louis Armstrong and the swing era and now on into Charlie Parker, Dizzy, Miles and the other beboppers. It's been an entertaining series and I'll be a little sad when it's over.
Jazz isn't a genre I've ever really cared much for. It's sort of like wine for me. I can sense the complexity and understand why people enjoy it but it never connected with me in any way. Still I can't say that I am connecting with it but I have definitely gained a better understanding and appreciation of the music and the people that make it. I love a good life story, always been a biography fiend so learning more about the lives and motivations of the people who created the music has gone a long ways towards helping me to enjoy it.
