Lately I've been on a Wagner kick, trying to fill in that particular hole in my education. Yesterday was Das Rheingold. I'd watched the first 30 minutes or so before I picked the kids up from school and when we got home Isadora decided she wanted to watch it with me so I caught her up on the plot as simply as I could and then she watched it with me translating the translations into Isadora for about an hour and a half. Surprisingly she actually picked up a lot of the plot. I would occasionally stop the movie and make sure she was following what was happening or ask her questions.
Today she tried to tell my mom about it. She had to ask me the name of the women who the dwarf stole the gold from (the Rheinmadiens), she talked about the 'bad giants' who 'stole the lady away from the gods' and informed my mother that the Lord Jesus did not live with these gods (she had asked me about this yesterday). She said that the lady made apples that the gods needed not to get sick and that one of them went to get the ring from the bad dwarf and that he turned into a snake and ate a bunny and got all bloody and then turned into a frog. Oh, and she was very distressed by the idea that if the bad guy won that no one would ever be able to love again so she very happily told my mom that it was all okay because the 'good guys won' and everyone could keep on loving.
I thought it was pretty impressive for a 5 year old to not only watch an opera in German for an hour and a half but to pick up that much of the story and remember it. It was definitely more entertaining than Tristan and Isolde which had me wanting to jump on the stage and stab the fuckers just to end my two discs of agony early. I'm still hearing the wailing... "Triiiiiiiiiiistan!!!!! Isssssssollllllde!!!" Argh! Drink some poison, get in a bloody sword fight, just die already! They didn't even bother trying to act much. Just sort of heaved around on stage singing while staring off in the distance and once in a while pretending to paw at each other. Bleh.
So tomorrow it's Die Walkure. I'm told this one isn't as much fun and it's doubtful that Isadora will enjoy it. Ah well. Maybe I'll rent some lighter operas and see if she enjoys them.
