I tried to read a book outside today while the girls played. By the time I'd get to the end of the page I'd have to brush off a layer of pollen before I could turn it. We're in desperate need of some rain down here and I really hope we get some this weekend. I'm just so thankful that none of us are very sensitive to it.

The book I'm trying to start is Richard Ellmann's famous biography of James Joyce. Of course I've never actually read any of Joyce's books nor do I really plan to try (though I have a copy of Portrait of the Artist... that I'll get around to one of these days) but this isn't new for me. I often read biographies of writers before I ever actually read any of their works. I'm having trouble getting into this one though. Maybe it's the Spring or more likely it's the fact that I've already read seven books this month. I realize this isn't a lot for some of you (I won't name names) but my average is typically four books in a month so it's possible that I just need a reading break. Today I watched an old silent film with Louise Brooks, Diary of a Lost Girl. It would have been so much better as the porno that it really wanted to be but couldn't. Tomorrow I'll likely watch Truffaut's Day for Night. I can't remember why I rented it but I'm certain there was a very good reason. Maybe after I've finished it I'll be ready to get back into JoyceWorld. Maybe.
