Mar. 2nd, 2008 09:43 pmThe weekend away was nice. The girls got picked up from school a little early and we drove up to Blue Ridge, picked up some groceries and checked into the cabin. Isadora gave us her guide to How to Get Eaten By A Bear. It went like this, "Step One: Go to the sign that says 'Get eaten by bear here.' Step Two: Wait." It was made all the more amusing by the fact that she was dead serious and not joking at all.
The girls and I spent some time in the hot tub and then Saturday morning we all got dressed and drove into Dahlonega site of the first gold rush in the States. We had a bleh lunch and then toured the local gold museum where Isadora decided that she HAD to go pan for gold so we headed over to a 'gold mine' where you could do just that and we all had a go at it. They also had the little gem sifting set up that I loved dearly as a kid. My great childhood disappointment wasn't finding out that Santa was a lie (we were never taught to believe in him) but rather that the gem stone dirt at these places was seeded and i wasn't just extraordinarily lucky and gems weren't there for the taking with a shovel and a sifter. *sniffle*
After heading out of town with our teeny vials of gold flecks floating in water and plastic sacks of gems we went to Amicalola Falls and did a two mile walk (read HIKE) up to a viewing platform and back down. It was lovely but I wish I had Isadora's energy and better shoes (and was a bit past 6 weeks post-birth). Then we drove back to the cabin, cooked some steaks and hot dogs on the grill and collapsed into bed.
We drove home a little early today so that we could get groceries and have things ready for going back to school/work tomorrow. On the way we got some Starbucks which I've discovered turns Jack into an absolutely miserable monster. He was not a happy boy for a few hours there. I'm hoping he either sleeps through much of the night or his mood improves dramatically.
Anyway so should you want to get eaten by a bear don't forget... first find the sign... then just wait.
