Jul. 24th, 2005 12:53 pmI was thinking this morning about linking relationships I've had with people with the music they left me with. I can trace it back to my preadolescent years, Becky who literally gave me an album by The Choir, one of the few Christian bands I still listen to. Then there was Christy who played Depeche Mode for me in her basement bedroom. I was titillated but not daring enough to make the break into the secular world at that point. When Chris played The Joshua Tree for me (this time in my basement) they were just Christian enough that I could justify enjoying them but still feel challenged. Chris also introduced me to DA. I'm sure he'd remember none of this.
The summer after graduating high school, Tomas and I spent much of in his truck listening to college radio. That's where I learned about The Smiths, Tori Amos, the B52's, REM, and a host of other artists and bands.
A few years into our marriage we got an XBAND which provided a rudimentary form of internet access. That's how I met Ken. He lived in Mass. and left me with nothing but Leonard Cohen and for that I'll always remember him.
Greg came along (also a product of my XBAND years) and played me all sorts of new things. Much of his music was not to my liking, he was a passionate noise and ambient fan but I'm glad I got to know a lot of it. He did catch me up on all the music that should have been part of my childhood but wasn't. He gave me the 80's. Not a bad gift at all.
Jeffrey's main musical gifting has been to provoke my curiosity, give it direction and assistance and to show me all sort of new areas to explore. He also introduced me to both Tom Waits and Elvis Costello (among many others).
There are plenty of bands and musicians I've 'discovered' all on my own and they hold a special place in my affections for that reason but I do enjoy the connections to memories that music given to me hold.
