Mar. 23rd, 2001 12:46 pmI had a disagreement with my mother in law the other day about church. She thinks that we need to go to church and raise our children in one "because children need to go to church". What she really means is 'children need the moral and social structure of a church'. Bull shit. I have no desire for my children to be indoctrinated by bigoted hypocritical fake people. I got upset and told her so. She got defensive and acted like it was all because I had only gone to one church and that the one she was going to was so much different "the pastor even wears jeans". First of all I have actually been to more than one church and what's more is that I have seen and heard about the way churches are run. I know all about church politics and have seen the nasty messes that fester under the surface. I don't want my kids brought up in it. My mom now has jumped into the argument and is telling me that I need a moral structure to teach my kids ethics with. I can't believe she is saying this since she has always at least given lip service to 'thinking for yourself'. God forbid Tomas and I figure out for ourselves what ethics are important to us and teach them to our children ourselves. How could we not want to bring in strangers to teach their own sense of ethics and morals to our kids. Geeze how foolish of us. Arg. I just need to learn to keep my mouth shut about such things around both of them.
