We had Christmas dinner at my dad's last night. His partner Richard told me that he had a friend who was in the process of restoring a home in Eastern Georgia that had been built in 1805 and had never had it's original belongings removed. Then he took me to a huge box of books that came from the house and let me take whatever I wanted. None of the books are in fantastic condition, the house was falling apart, but some are in HORRIBLE shape. The book I am most excited about is one of those, it's a Southern cookbook from 1883 and includes this dedication,

"To The Mothers, Wives and Daughters of the "Sunny South", who have so bravely faced the difficulties which the new social conditions have imposed on them as mistresses of Southern homes, and on whose courage and fidelity in good or ill fortune the future of their beloved land must depend..."

It's called The Dixie Cookbook and a label in the front proudly advertises that it was available only by subscription and not in bookstores. I love it. I wish it weren't in such horrifying condition and that I knew what to do to help it.

Anyway, I'm more excited by this box of old decaying books than I could have been by anything else he might have bought us. I'm pathetic. Now I need a bookshelf to put them on.
