The girls stayed home from school today. Rhiannon will have to stay home tomorrow too since they have a 24 hour with no fever policy now. I'm making a sort of Thai chicken soup with some coconut milk, chicken broth, mushrooms, lime, ginger, chicken, mushrooms and rice noodles. I'd drop some chilis in there if the kids would tolerate them and I had any. I need to make a run to the Dekalb Farmer's Market (which is really just an international grocery store rather than a farmer's market) and restock some things like lemongrass and lime leaves.

I read this interesting article on the placebo effect this morning. Ah the power of faith, be it in a god or in science.

Tomas and I played a lot of WoW this weekend since the kids were out of commission and we were housebound. I got my DK to 79 so I should finally have an 80 after years and years of on and off WoW playing and I'm in a guild with Tomas that is amusing. They're plotting how to get me into whatever it is you do when you turn 80. I still haven't learned the differences between raids, dungeons and instances. I was just very excited to finally be able to fly around Northerend looking for ore.

An instance is your own private copy of a part of the world.

So when you first enter an instance, all the monsters are reset to their starting positions, all the big bosses are there, etc.

That means you won't ever go in and someone will have recently killed the boss and you have to wait for it to respawn. Or have killed all the monsters on the way in, like sometimes happens when you go into a cave or something.

Dungeons refer to instances designed for 5 people. All of the current level 80 ones can be set for "heroic" mode, which just makes them harder, but gives better loot.

Raids are instances designed for 10 or 25 people these days. (In the good old days, there were also 20 and 40 man raids.)

Raids also refer to a kind of super-sized group of up to 40 people. You can have a "Raid" of people doing other things, such as attacking the enemy capitals, in wintergrasp or other PvP, or doing other things outside of an instance. But usually raids are created to go inside instances designed for it.

Yeah, I get what an instance is I just get confused about the differences between which ones are just normal dungeons and which are raids. Then there's all the tricks you have to learn about how to fight all the different bosses... feh, just seems rather complicated and fussy to me. Tomas says since I'm just doing dps it doesn't matter too much and I'm unlikely to screw up too badly. :)
