I've been poking around in my family history some more. The most frustrating undiscovered line is that of my dad's father's maternal grandmother, ie: my great-great grandmother. Her name was Sallie (or Sally) Braddy (or Brady) and my great grandmother told her family that she was full blooded Cherokee. We know that she was born in 1879 and that she and her husband married in 1896 in Cherokee Co. GA. Other than that we are completely stuck. Argh.

(you probably know most of this but i will suggest on the off chance you don't) Check census records, county birth marriage and death records, tombstones if you find where she is buried, family bibles if any, with the Cherokee Nations (if they have any records), and with the Mormon genealogical group in Salt Lake City. One or more should have records. Other than the Cherokee records, those are all sources where my mother found the information she need to trace the family. Good luck.

Yup, I subscribe to ancestry.com on and off and also have spent many hours scouring the Mormon site ( http://www.familysearch.org ). I've also checked some of the Native American rolls (there are various indexes that were made in certain years of people who were registered as Native American). Every other branch of my family I have at least one more step back on and in most cases many more than that. Right now my best hope is to dig up a new clue from a distant family member (dad is working on that angle) or make a trip down to our state archives and unearth something there.

If you know where she lived, newspaper archives are good. Also, church records and graveyards. Spent lots of hours as preteen walking around graveyards while mother read tombstones. Lots of fun. You need to subject your children to that. Lol.
