Our 401k money came through today. I plan on getting a sofa. Not a very expensive one but believe it or not it will be the first piece of furniture I've bought since we've been married. Furniture was never as much fun as computers or dvd players but since I'm a mommy now I feel compelled to own things like sofas and tables and chairs. It's weird. Problem is, I've never thought much about buying one so I don't have any idea what I want in a sofa. Actually overall I don't have much of an interior decorating sense. . . or an exterior one or much of any kind of sense of style at all. It just isn't my thing. I know I don't want something that looks like a florist vomited on it and I want something comfortable and it has to hold up ok to children and a dog. I suppose it's time to start looking at things. Now where should I start looking? Arg.
I'm glad the money came already though. It's nice to not have to worry so much about Christmas plus I can place my huge Lush order which will include many Christmas presents.

be careful, it it is a lot of money, you could get hit with a tax penalty for not reinvesting it.

Yup, we plan on saving over half of it to deal with taxes plus he doesn't claim anyone but himself in his pay so we usually get a great deal back that can be used to cover anything too. His new job doesn't have a 401k plan and we were told it would get taxed regardless.

he may be able to reinvest it himself, check with a bank and see.

You can rollover the 401k moneys into a rollover IRA - you wouldn't take a tax hit at all. There's more information about this sort of stuff at the Motley Fool -www.fool.com.
