I find it amusing that I've made it to 30 years of age without ever really learning to apply makeup very well, only briefly owning a working hair dryer, never got the hang of 'styling' or fixing my hair in any way shape or form or using any sorts of products outside of my few years of dancing where stage makeup and hair were required. I didn't even wear much in high school. But now here I am attempting to acquire some skill at both in one week. I can't say that my face is too happy about matters so now I also need to figure out proper skin care. Argh. There are certain female abilities be they learned or something most are born with, that I'm just totally missing. I have no clue how to dress to any flattering effect either. Don't know what colors look good on me, not sure how to play up my positives (or even what they are really), totally lost when it comes to assembling an outfit. I barely even know what I like. I guess no time like the present to learn.

I am firmly convinced that there was some secret Girl School that the other girls all got to go to.

Unless you're trying for some mythic office dresscode ideal ("business casual" - huh? I *still* don't get it. What's casual about a suit and pantyhose?), just make sure that all the bits are covered, and that nothing is too terribly flamboyant.

As for makeup and hair? I don't wear the stuff (unless I'm going clubbing) and there's a *reason* I've been letting my hair grow out - when it's this long, you don't HAVE to style it, so I can't help with that.

Yeah, it's a mystery.

No, I'd just like to develop some sense of style. I've mostly been style free in dress/hair/and makeup for a long time now and obviously it ain't going to happen on its own. My hair has been self chopped and unfussed with most of my life. It's pretty funny to watch me fight with it now.

Oh yes, so that I could fall apart after they mocked my poor fashion skills on national tv. Fun times! I need the advice and money from the show without the public scorning.

You can't get the reward without the humiliation. There's a trade off in these things.

Suggestion...go to the magazine rack pretty much anywhere and invest in the following: (also go to the library and look at back issues) Seventeen, Cosmopolitan, and any other teen girls mag where the emphasis is on clothing and on makeup. You might also look in the bookstore for books on such. There are several. Anyway, other than her friends and experimentation, that is how my daughter learned. And, they all used the mags. Good Luck.

Remember, in most things, and this includes makeup, simple is best. Don't try for a complex look. Keep in simple and minimal. For clothes, stick to a few basic colors that mix and match in a way to maximize the look while keeping the color mix and number small and manageable.
