Two "events" in the news that I feel compelled to talk about. First off (because it makes me less ill than the second thing) is Ginger/It/Segway. What do you all think about this thing? Revolutionary idea or over hyped scooter? I'm not really sure yet. Maybe it's the earliest step in something revolutionary I think. I don't live "in" the city so there isn't a lot it could do for me. Perhaps if I did...? Also doesn't look very useful for someone with small children. And they keep touting it's usefulness for carrying and delivering packages... but what are you supposed to do with them? Sling them over your shoulder the whole time? I suppose they will eventually add and adapt things.... small storage areas? Places to put small children? Right now it just looks like a fun toy.

Next thing...

Israel and Palestine make me utterly ill. They are like toddlers with deadly weapons (not that the U.S. can't be that way sometimes, we are after all the biggest kid in the sandbox). Sometimes I wish that all the malcontents over there would just hurry up and blow each other to bits so that the Jews and Arabs who are actually capable of living together in peace could just make their own country. I know better, however, than to actually ever dream there will be peace in that area. It just isn't going to happen. Growing up I always believed... "Oh those evil Arabs tormenting God's people" but I know better now. I'd be pretty damn upset too if I'd been living somewhere for generations and someone decided to make my front yard their homeland. Not that I don't understand the Jewish need for one. *sigh* What a fucking mess.

Well, I've made myself sick now. Think I'll go back to reading about silly new inventions.

While I agree with you almost completely, the cynic in me compells me to point out that hte Jews haven't had a homeland for centuries....*sigh* otherwise, you are absolutley correct. The problem is one created by the Brits early last century. And, what is done is done. So , every one needs to get over it.

As for Segway/It/Ginger....I first saw it, I thought how stupid. Then I saw it working. Hmmmmmmmm, looks interesting....might actually work. Not that we need an excuse to get less exercise tho. Besides, where the hell would you park the damn thing? I can see an elevator full of people all standing on their IT...doesn't that sound dirty too? lol

Well, I think they "deserve" a homeland. The problem is of course, that the area that is Israel/Palestine is so crucial and important not just to the Jewish tradtion but to the Arabs, and the Christians. I don't see any of them ever getting over it though that would certainly be nice.

The inventor addressed the whole "yeah like people need less of a reason to walk" thing by pointing out that school kids use calculators. I don't think that's a very good analogy to use. I see the use of calculators much like the use of prepared foods or grocery store produce (as opposed to growing/preparing things yourself). In order for our culture to progress some skills will pass only to few... how many people know how to weave? I think certain math skills are like that... so some children never get a good grasp on some basic math concepts, yeah I guess that could be bad, but will they ever really live lives without access to calculators? Probably not. And the time they would have been using getting a handle on long division could be used to teach them skills they really will need.
Well that got long winded. heh

i agree that it is a bad analogy...tho I think we need basic math skills too.

a better analogy might have been the difference between a bicycle and a motorcycle.

a better analogy for the math one might have been the difference between using a slide rule to figure out a computation and a calculator.
